While Polio is no longer prevalent in many countries in the world, some clients of refugee backgrounds (like many migrants) come from countries where polio may have once been prevalent, or where childhood vaccine was not universally issued. Post-polio syndrome can manifest many years after active polio infection and requires specialist consult.
Polio Services Victoria provides specialist assessment and collaboration with mainstream health providers to develop client service plans and provides information and education service to health providers, clients who have had polio, and the community.
Services are free and open to all current Victorian residents with a history of poliomyelitis as well as community providers and other interested parties who are seeking advice or information about PSV and polio.
