Recent legislative changes have reintroduced the Temporary Protection Visa (TPV). This will impact a large number of asylum seekers.
The TPV is a three year protection visa for people who have been determined to be refugees. A TPV will include work rights and access to Medicare, social security benefits, job matching, and counselling for torture or trauma. Minors will have access to education. A TPV does not allow family reunion, travel to a person’s home country, or travel outside of Australia without approval in writing from the Department of Immigration.
The Department of Immigration continues to release information about the re-introduction of the TPV. Up to date information can be found on the Department website HERE.
The Refugee Immigration Legal Centre (RILC) has produced a fact sheet on the TPV available HERE.
