Volunteer for the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)
Can you or someone you know spare 1-2 hours per week to support refugees and migrants to learn English?
The Voluntary Tutor Scheme (VTS) matches volunteers with Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) students for one-to-one English language support and conversation practice. VTS students are migrants and refugees who are learning English and settling into life in Australia.
Volunteering can change lives
Volunteers are vital to helping eligible migrants and refugees practise English, learn about the Australian way of life and connect to the local community. This provides them with a strong foundation to successfully integrate into Australian society.
The scheme welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds.
Many volunteers are university students looking to gain practical experience and develop their skills, while others are working professionals, community members, and retirees who would like to give back and support their local community.
As a volunteer, you will be fully supported and get the opportunity to:
- help new Australians learn English and settle into Australian community
- meet new people from a wide range of backgrounds, including students and other staff members
- develop new skills
- learn about other languages and cultures
- become part of a dynamic and committed volunteer team
You don’t need to speak another language or have experience teaching.
What does a Volunteer Tutor do?
On completion of the training you will be matches with a Melbourne AMEP student who you will tutor one on one for 1-2 hours per week. Contact with the student will either be face to face or via digital and mobile platforms such as FaceTime or WhatsApp video calls. You will be provided with additional training and ongoing support from the Volunteer Tutor Scheme (VTS) Team throughout your involvement.
